OK, I'm someone who's never actually played this piece, but have seen it on a couple of occasions. Is there actually an offstage tuba part?? The only tuba I heard was the ONstage part, a little trio with a trumpet and a piano. Everything was oom-pah. Both performances I saw was done on sousas, mainly because of the looks (onstage tuba in an opera, you can't really take it seriously, can you) and since the part is so brief, technically unchallenging and not particularly important either, the actual tone that comes out (apart from the pitch, obviously) would be of lesser importance than the appearance.
From an audience point of view (one that is not totally anorac...)
