On ALL tubas the 5th partial notes tend to be flat, and 6th partials tend to be sharp. On MOST tubas the 3rd partial 1&2 notends to be sharp so in most cases I play THAT nore 3rd valve. ALL 2&4 notes are sharp so an alternate fingering with the 5th valve must be used, or a slide (usually 4th) must be pulled. These are generalities and can easily be worked out with your horn and a tuning box. In many cases, the mouthpiece can make a BIG difference in intonation. I have 2 students who went from Helleberg style mouthpieces to Mirafone style mouthpieses and their overall pitch improved drastically.
