As I understand it, they were meant to be played using one tuning bit, and that's how I play mine.
I recall seeing a catalog picture that someone posted that showed a player sitting next to the 20J while it was mounted in a tuba-tamer (or something similar). The tuba was vertical. I don't recall if it showed the tuning bit.
Of course, if it works, it's right. Why would someone get upset over it?
