Definitely stay on the positive... next time she has prepared for a lesson a very positive "you must have put in a lot of time this week, much better" might just be the positive reinforcement she needs to keep working for the next rehearsal.

I had an instructor do that for a while and I was so embarrassed when I didn't get the feedback that I started practicing longer for everything. For the first couple of months the only negative feedback was a rather stern look... then a "you didn't have much time for practice?" came up... It only took one or two of those to figure out what it took.

By the time I made it to college he had instilled a good "practice ethic" that has carried over into my career.
