My first thought when I read this was that there's something wrong with the interaction between student and teacher, i.e. she might respond to a bad lesson by working hard and to a good lesson by slacking off. However, such behavior persisting over time would be baffling and, in light of Klaus' post, I started thinking about some things.

When I was in secondary school, I had to visit my father every other weekend as part of the divorce decree. Since my mother lived in an apartment, I actually got to practice more on those weekends when I went to my father's house. (Incidentally, I spent weekday afternoons at my grandparents' house, which is why that didn't affect my practicing during the week.)

I know the every-other-weekend bit is common in many areas, it might be in her case as well: and if the lesson is on a Monday or Tuesday...
