My employer encourages his employees to take part in community/social/professional activities. He overlooks my chair duties with The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, an occassional 'long lunch' so I can play with the Shrine Band for a nursing home or hospital gig, and the fact that I never schedule out-of-town overnight trips on Monday or Tuesday nights so I can make my rehearsals. I am also the president and founder of a local community band so the receptionists are used to an occassional phone call looking for the 'band guy'. Of course, these outside activities are all done in moderation and never in a way that they interfere with day to day work responsibilities.
It's nice to work where they place more value on what you know than how much you might be pressured to produce.
