Mike,

I had Dan Oberloh vent the valves on my New King 2341. I would highly recomend it.

Two other valve mods I found helpful. First, I had nylon guides installed. This requires tapping the piston to accomodate the larger threads of the nylon guides. Second, I found that my factory springs occassionally made an audible "rattling" sound on certain notes. I replaced them with Yamaha springs, which have a thin plastic film on the ends which prevents this problem.

I obtained the springs and guides from Matt at Dillon Music. Any good repair shop will be able to do the work.

Taken collectively, the modified valves are as fast and quiet as you will get on any piston tuba, and are relatively inexpensive.

Good luck

Tony E
