Just go easy at first and buy a decent copy-cat-of-Bach brand 1-1/2G (Blessing, UMI, etc.)

I've tried to double on bass trombone (play a gig without bass trombone chops) with a huge professional-line mouthpiece and almost ended up getting into trouble by the end of the job.

If you want to move to something bigger after awhile, that's OK, but on the front end you wouldn't have blown a lot of $$$ on a mouthpiece of which you were unsure.

You can also (later) have a good craftsman open up the throat of your cheapie 1-1/2G and that will allow you to play pitches in the cellar with greater ease.

Summary: Go easy on the mouthpiece size and your pocketbook at first. Wait to do more until you've learned something from experience.
