I would suggest using a bass trombone mouthpiece which is not too big. Think about it; a lot of full time bass trombonists aren't strong enough players to get a decent sound on a 1G. Why should we, as doublers, expect to be able to do it?
I've been doubling on both instruments professionally for about 7 years, and I have found that the best mouthpieces for me are the size of a Bach 1 1/2G or a tiny bit bigger. Anything bigger than that, and I lose the essence of my bass trombone sound.
