There is nothing in the world wrong with unworn and well-maintained S linkages. I wouldn't consider changing them unless they made noise. In all the tubas that I've converted, however, only two had S linkages. The others had poor-quality ball-and-socket arrangements. The original ball-and-socket parts were lightweight and weak on the Sanders, and the Miraphone white plastic ball joints on my 186 were worn out. The semi-metal ball joints on the Vespro and the similar ones on the Musica F were not adjustible and of terrible quality. Only on a Rudy Meinl BBb and a Miraphone CC did I replace very old and very worn S linkages.
