Ask a good 'cellist to play it for you. As you already know, markings such as those that seem to be conflicting articulations for wind players make perfect sense to string players.

If this isn't going to happen, I "mark" each of those pitches and play them long...allowing the style of the other instruments playing the same line to make the rule.

I've only been hired to play the overture two or three times, but I think if I played as you described on the recording you heard, the conductors would have asked me to tacet - then told their personnel managers to take me off of their call lists...The last time I played it I was tempted to play it on a compensating euphonium...' more of an ophicleide than my F tuba.
