I think tradition is something not to be overlooked, although I know a few players in Germany and Austria(certainly not all) who use some large equipment. However, Orchestra's that are known for their sound are probably not going to want to change it. Try to imagine going to a Chicago Symphony audition with An MW 182 F, or similar small horn. You might be the best player there, but not in the Chicago tradition. If you're thinking of auditioning over there, I would definitely find out what the person you'd replace is playing on. It might surprise you. Peace. ASG
