What, the guy never heard of a sousaphone tuning bit? Honestly, that's a pretty weak reason--he certainly could've gotten the horn modified (if he was too fat in fact) to fit him far cheaper than buying a new one. Heck, since he was a member of CSO, York would've probably done it free gratis, just to keep the PR value: "York--the tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra".
My guess is that he simply didn't like the horn for one reason or another.
FWIW, it's the carriage rings on the back of the 4/4 York that rub me in the wrong places--and I'm not all that portly.
