Everyone loves positive reinforcement. Give them something melodic and just slightly challenging to play, then put them in front of mom and grandma. Mom and Grandma will rave, and the student will want more of that good stuff. Another possility is to feature the tubas on a concert. That usually drums up some real enthusiasm, and can bolster recruiting for the next generation of tubists as well.
