What the heck....a kid I know went straight from high school to the Army, hoping to play trombone. They put him on tuba. I warned him (from my basically complete lack of knowledge) that the Army was an organization that might chew him up and spit him out....and he replied that he thought he could change the Army if he tried hard enough. (You can stop laughing now!) ... four years later he came back, chewed up and spit out, and a very fine tuba player. He does not play tuba now at all, and is working some weird shift work stuff for AOL answering questions from people who call in. Not the best ending to the story, eh? I assume that in a few more years he will find himself (he is a good kid) and hopefully realize that there were positive results from the experience.
