I have heard that Warren got into the finals on a smaller tuba than the Holton he owned. When he was asking about the finals, he was told the committee was looking for a larger sound so he had the Holton shipped to New York by air just in time.
It is hearsay, but sounds likely.
My advice to anyone auditioning for an orchestra: play the instruments you enjoy the most and forget trying to out-think the committee.
