The AT-822 is in the price range you mention when you buy it used. But I agree it's worth it. It has a conservatively rated maximum SPL of 125 dB, which is worlds better than the 115 dB rating of the better Sony. That means you can put it closer to the instrument than the Sony without bottoming out the transducer. The Sony mike works, but you have to make sure it isn't too close.

On the subject of minidisc recorders, my only beef with mine is that the level controls are accessible only through menus and have to be set every time the unit is powered up. I'd like one with analog level controls. But what I have was cheap and in terms of sound quality will get you about 97% of what studio-quality gear will do.

The bigger factor is the room in which you record. Most home recordings are limited by the room far more than by the equipment.
