Let's add Andy Porter to the list from RNCM who I love to hear play. His sound is rather like David Thorton's which has a lot of Steven Mead influence of course. Since going to Dyke, Thorton's sound has 'filled-out' somewhat under the influence of Nick Childs I'd say.
I agree about the mixture Steve Mead has in his sound. Having watched BBC Band of the Year during the late '80's Steve's sound has altered somewhat. I like Steve's playing as I feel his class as a musician comes through but I've heard A LOT of Banders run his playing into the ground with much emphasis being in his 'different' (lighter) sound.
