Speaking of obviously definitive recordings, I was just reviewing the Dennis Brain recordings of Strauss - partially to remind myself what a musical idiot I am, and partially to encourage myself to be less of an idiot...His playing was so amazing that it also makes me realize that there probably will not ever be horn player who will equal Brain.
I'm not particularly fond of the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto, but that aside I don't think Fletcher's recording will be outdone.
