Speaking a bit of heresy here, there might be a trombonist, hornist, or trumpet player who could get the lad started. Some mighty fine tubists were turned out by some guy named Knaub at Eastman... And then there's was a trumpet prof at Lamar who taught Bob LeBlanc, Les Varner, and Toby Hanks. A good brass teacher can start him on basics without driving 400 miles. There may also be a band director in the surrounding area who just happens to have had excellent instruction in college--where, after all, do all these tuba players go when they graduate? Into orchestras? Buddy Baker found an old circus band player when he was a kid looking for lessons. A fellow (LA recording artist) who I intereviewed a while back, happened to have a band director from another school system living near him who was a very good player, and very sound teacher--"Nobody anyone had heard of." So, they're out there...
