You'll get different opinions on the need for a hard case. I firmly believe that a tuba should only be out of its hard case when it's being played. Even though I am very careful, I regularly bump my case into door jams and when loading and unloading it from the car. If it had been in a gig bag, I believe it would have had some dents by now.

If you bought the 186 new, it should have come with a mouthpiece, either a TU29 or TU33. Both are good mouthpieces. The TU33 is a big mouthpiece and might be a little more difficult to use for some one just starting out.
