The concept of letting the "tips" of the male branches have thicker walls than the rest of these branches is not unique for Willson.

Hoyer, the horn-making master workshop under B&S, also used is for all of its horn slides.

I wondered about why it was so on my 5RV single Bb horn. But only until I got my Conn 28D double. The 1st valve slide on the Bb side tends to stick even if well lubricated. The smaller contact surface on the Hoyer prevents this from happening.

When Meinl bought B&S, this concept was abandoned immediately for cost reasons.

Basically the idea is the same as with the stockings of trombone slides. I don't know why, but the Danish term for these stockings is "slidsko" which translates into shoe-which-take-up-the wear. The German term is "Stiefel", which means boot.
