Good comments. After reading the replies, I compared the 3L against a Conn Helleberg 7B and my Bach 18.
What I found is that the Conn and the Bach help me produce better tone (by an order of magnitude) but the Dennis Wick gives me better control of the pitch and dynamics. From what I am able to discern from our muni band director, ability to COUNT, intonation and control the dynamics far outweigh the tambre of the instrument (from his perspective anyway).
Since it's a sight-reading band, I can't afford to worry about fracking. So the Wick 3L makes a good mouthpiece in this application.
Just more info, for what it's worth.....
