The Vienna Philharmonic is more than just another great orchestra. It has its own Viennese style, Viennese instruments, and Viennese literature. It's fairly difficult to pull this off without quite a few life-long Viennese musicians (or at least very Viennese-savvy) in the mix. If a oriental person - obviously extremely well-versed in these specific practices and arts - can serve in that capacity and the Vienna Philharmonic is happy, all is well. However, I believe that the Vienna Philharmonic, as a cultural/artistic ensemble, has every right to hire whomever they chose for whatever reason.
