Number one priority is sound quality. This includes timbre, intonation, articulation, evenness, consistancy, bla, bla, bla. Ya gotta sound good playing a Bb scale or a Bb arpeggio.

Close on the heals of sound quality is the ability to turn a phrase. Melodies of some sort which are well thought out and not just played on autopilot. It is not very often that excellent music is communicated well by accident. Pay attention and stay musically focused in every bar of even the most simple things such as Arbans melodies from the trumpet book, Bach cello suites, or any host of other melodic material.

After those two things comes technical studies such as multiple tonguing, velocity studies such as Arbans and Clark Gordon.

My daily routine should always contain sound quality, intonation, and interpretive practice. This is daily affirmation to the face and brain to build on and continue proper fundemental function.
