The finish options available are practically limitless for an instrument, but there are two reasons why most instruments are finished in a simple clear or gold lacquer, or in silver-plate. First, it's cheaper than custom work, and second, when a repairman takes a dent out of your Kandy-apple raspberry tuba, touching up the finish becomes a major headache. I've had to tell a saxophone customer with a black-lacquer horn, "You can either live with the dent, live with a imperfect finish after the dent is removed, or you can have the whole horn refinished." That can get really expensive on a tuba, but then again, I do have a fiberglass sousa that I plan to refinish in deep metallic blue. . .
