Originally EEb and Eb tubas were made to make it easy to convert excess trumpet players to tuba players. All it takes for reading is a key shift and reading the bass cleff part as if written for Bb trumpet. Then all the fingerings match. Definitely a crutch.

I've played (as an amateur) orchestra, band, solo, musicals (sometimes covering second trombone, tuba and bassoon parts whichever was most interesting), and brass quartets with my 1908 EEb Holton. It has the same playing range as the BBb Conn 20J I played at Washington U many years ago. It doesn't have the precise intonation of the Conn. That may be a problem with worn valves or bad valve corks or just the character of the horn.
