The answer will be very obvious if you get a chance to record yourself for a few days. "Dark" is a slippery word. I would assume the conductor is looking for a sound which is dynamic, but blends better with the rest of the ensemble.

Try tripling your practice time for 2 weeks and recording yourself at least 1 hour per day over the same period of time.
