Actually, what I have witnessed over the years when people get too involved with their practicing is that they tend to withdraw from everything around them. They tend to lose the ability to interact with others and are somewhat out of touch with reality. Some people have suffered nervous breakdowns and the like.

Practicing a lot can be very good for you and you will see rapid and great improvement in your skills, but you have to know when to go and hang out with your friends or other players to maintain a balance. I have done as much as 18 hours a day for several weeks preparing for an audition (which I won), but I try to limit things at 8 hours a day when I'm in full preparation mode currently. Ususally 2 hours a day will allow for maintenance for me.
