The workmanship for both the Rudolph Meinl and Hirshbrunner tubas that I have seen are both first rate and both should last a lifetime (at least) with proper care. I do not know what the difference in the manfacturing process is between the two and would be interested if someone knows, but my opinion is that with high quality tubas such as these it comes down to the one that is best for you. In my experience, the Rudolph Meinl has more "core" in the sound (yet another slippery term, sorry) and the Hirshbrunners have a "rounder" sound (sorry again). As for projection, that would depend on the model, but the larger models for either make project very well in large ensembles (as do the 4/4's with the proper handeling). Also; if you have not already, check out the Hirshbrunner web site, I think that it is very good.

good luck,
