My son, who is a (French) Horn player is going through this now. It took him about 2-3 weeks for the initial adjustment and his teacher told him that if he learned to play with the braces but without a guard, it would make him a better player after the braces were gone. He does very well, however, after each adjustment of the braces, there is a minor (about a week) re-adjustment. We have learned to schedule his trips to the orthodontist around his concerts, auditions etc! Incidently, he just made All-State honors band so his playing seems to be progressing well.
