The approach Dave described is standard practice, from merchants as well as private parties. Generally you do pay up front, after you have negotiated your trial period.
Personally, I think 2 weeks is good if you wanna make sure the horn is not a dog,
but there is no harm in asking for more "play-test" time if you are shopping for a really
special horn. The last horn I bought I was offered a one-month play-test period. It wasn't really necessary though, because the horn turned out to be so superior I'd have jumped cartwheels for having gotten it!
