It's called use tax and it generally applies to property brought into the state on which no state sales tax was paid. Likelihood of getting caught? Pretty small for a one shot purchase of something like a tuba (as opposed to an automobile with a title that needs to be registered) by an individual (as opposed to a business). Is that the right test? Not exactly Ghandi's idea of civil disobedience.

Plus, it's one thing for Brasswind not to charge sales tax on a mail, e-mail or phone order from out-of-state which is shipped out-of-state. It's something else where the deal is cut, the purchase and sale are clearly made and the purchase price is paid while the purchaser is standing right there in the store, but sales tax isn't charged because the horn is then shipped out-of-state. Will Brasswind do that?

I know. What's "like a tuba"?
