I feel that the shank length and the depth that it goes into the receiver does make a difference in the way the notes center on your horn. I bought a Monette mouthpiece, and it has made a big difference in the way the notes center on my horn. The shank on monette mouthpieces have a thicker rim, a shorter length, and fit deeper into the receiver. I noticed right away that playing with a centered tone took much less adjustment. It may be worth your while to check out the monette web site. It has quite a bit of information about their equipment design, and the philosophy behind it. It may have information about why they made the changes they did to the mouthpiece shank. That's my two cents worth. Good Luck
