I believe it's Mr. Jacobs by himself in Shostakovich 1st. The bottom of that first quiet B major chord is SO "Jake." Bernstein/CSO performed Shostakovich 7th at Avery Fisher just after the Chicago concerts. One reaction passing through the crowd was "hey, maybe this isn't such a bad hall after all." For the 7th, Rex played, in effect, assistant, doubling the big tuttis. Brian Frederiksen may have more detailed recollections.
