That's a belt. I was experimenting with making the bell vibrate less. I like dead bells on some horns. I have a belt on my 5/4 Rudy that really helps with the projection. This horn seems to be better without any dampening treatment at all. I should have taken it off for the picture. After playing it for a while this morning I'm having very serious doubts about selling it. Having two of them is gluttonous, but they both sure play nice.
