I work in a copy shop, and you wouldn't believe how many folks just don't get copyright laws!!

Anyways, in response to the initial post: Yes, I copy music, from originals that I or a member of my ensemble own(s). If I have originals, I make copies for the ensemble-they can mark them up, lose them, etc. and it's okay. There was only once I didn't do this, and I'm missing 3 of 5 parts! I also think it's acceptable for band directors to copy parts to originals that THEY OR THE SCHOOL own, either because they need more parts or because they don't want parts lost.

I'm not sure how this fits into copyright, I know that for educational purposes, you can reproduce a limited number of copies. I'm not sure about situations like the small ensemble, etc. I tend to agree with the post about the 'spirit of the law'. Although I don't really know how accurate that is.
