Several months ago, I tried "shortcutting" a Conn 25J (not "K") short-action TUBA sort of similar to the way that you described as an attempt to knock out a "quickie" 6/4 CC.
The response and intonation were dreadful.
I put all of the parts in a box and sold it to a guy that wanted to restore it and play it in BBb. (I wasn't interested in backing up and "doing it right" - just in the "shortcut" experiment.)
