I've been playing a Cerveny 686 for the past 4-5 years. It has proven to be a fun tuba for me. If I had 2-3 times the money I would go for a higher quality piston valved horn but, for a new tuba in the <$3500K price break, the 686 is tough to beat. Sonics/timbre are similar to the Miraphone 186. The only major down side for me has been a slightly flat 2nd valve.....yeah, I could have it cut down, but that takes more money. There tends to be the perverbial instrument to instrument variability with these horns....so try 'em out first. Until I can spring for a significant upgrade, I can still be making music with my Cerveny.
