The guy's name is Earle Hagen. He uses a lot of tight harmonies and mutes for the brass, plus the usual "leitmotifs" and many transformations and evolutions of the themes in several episodes. Very nicely done stuff! Aside from Barney's raves, his work is one of the best parts of TAGS. I don't know anything about his background, though. (Do non-musicians pick up on these treatments of the music or is it a function of our theory/eartraining classes?)
