I have a Joe Tarto record called "Titan of the Tuba." It has a lot of traditional jazz with other good musicians like Tommy Dorsey and Miff Mole. There are occasional solos by Tarto, but they're not terribly impressive. Bill Barber was on the "Birth of the Cool" recordings with Miles Davis; I don't think there are any tuba solos on those. One good recording of Butterfield is a Clark Terry album (available on CD) called "Top and Bottom Brass." Terry has an unbelievable mouthpiece solo on one of the tracks!
Do you know about Brad Felt from Detroit? He plays tuba and euphonium, and has a CD out from a few years ago titled "Exordium." Also, Bob Stewart "Then and Now."
