I think that this is an area where players that had piano lessons before they were tubists might have an advantage. Since pianists are trained to read music vertically as well as horizontally, my guess is that they can recognize scale and arpeggio patterns more as musical "words" than as individual notes. I have no evidence for that assumption, but it makes sense to me.

Any piano doublers have a different take?
