As an eastman student I can say that that is wholey untrue. Many of us love to play in the wind ensembles, what is frustrating is their recent choice of repertoire (which has been mostly chamber wind serenades ) However the difference between todays wind ensemble and the one on those recordings is that today, we players are rotated between the ensembles (which gives us adaptability and makes us better listeners and followers.) However, the ensembles that are recorded, play together longer and are a much tighter group.
