If you got a Sanders that was built by Cerveny (which most of them are), then you did fine. They are not as well detailed or durably made as a Miraphone or a Meinl-Weston, but they play pretty well in relation to their cost. Mine was a typical 4/4 rotary BBb tuba, and it was a vast improvement over the ancient Besson Stratford I had been playing. I have to say, however, that just about any horn would have an improvement.

The distance between the Sanders and the student-model Besson was vast compared to the difference between the Sanders and the Miraphone I traded it for.
