You were right when you mentioned Fiske. (From Langwill) McFadden advertised that he had "long years of experience in Europe and in the Country." From 1869 through 1872 he was a seller of hosiery and fancy articles in Worcester,MA. McFadden then partnered with Beaumont in 1873 after Frederick Beaumont left Fiske. Fiske then publically complained that McFadden and Beaumont had illegally copied his patented rotary valves. McFadden then moved to Syracuse, NY where he began manufacturing his own instruments.

You haven't heard of him because he had a relatively small, local, output and he only manufactured for about 15 years. He was at 71 and 73 S. Clinton in Syracuse between 1884 and 1889.
