I have to agree 110% with Charlie. Pistons cut the airflow like a knife through butter, so it's easier to articulate using the valves. Jazz trumpeters have used this facility for decades, and it would a lot tougher with a rotary trumpet. For this reason, I--as a lazy person--have always preferred the pistons over the rotaries (also, the pistons are easier to clean and oil, although this has to be done more often than with rotaries). Finally, I add one caveat. The only exception I would make would be the 191 Mirafone, which is the only rotary I've ever played that didn't play like a rotary. I think Charlie can vouch for that...
