The previous post was not an attempt to make any point. It was simply an answer to Steve Dedman's question about an audition deposit, "what's it for?"

So in answering Steve's question I missed the point. What exactly is the point? You'll decide to take the audition if the list is easy enough, or contains the excerpts YOU want to play? If you are really ready to hold this job, it doesn't matter what the material is. There's nothing on the list you wouldn't be expected to be able to perform with the orchestra if you held the position. Besides, players who have a legitimate chance of winning the audition don't need to see the list before applying, because they ALREADY know the material.

In a lesson, Abe Torchinsky once said to me, "I don't know if Warren Deck was the best tuba player at the New York Phil. audition, but I know he was the most prepared."
