I had a Conn Worcester euphonium with front action valves that dated from 1891, 24375 serial number. I haven't seen any older horns with front action pistons. I also have a Henry Distin, 3 valve, top action, BBb tuba from the 1890s, so they weren't all in Eb. My Boosey Eb saxhorn from the 1870s has a New York importer's name on it, so it was obviously used here at that time. I have seen Lehnert, Fiske, Boston Musical Instrument Manufactory (Graves, Wright, et. al), Slater, and Distin tubas, all made in the US, from the 1860s and 1870s, but all of these that I have seen have been top action, either rotary or piston.
