I seem to remember the Sousa biography had some pictures of early front-action piston tubas that were custom made for the sousa band by Conn. They also made one with rotary valves for Helleberg, who agreed that piston valves were better, but not what he liked. I don't have the book with me right now to check the dates, but I suspect those instruments may have started a trend.
