Dietrich Kleine-Horst may have gotten the idea of the tritonus valve from the double tuba he built for me about 10 years ago. The switch valve lowers it three whole tones. It also makes a lot of sense to do that on simple four valve tubas also. By keeping the slides properly pulled one can get all the combinations (12, 23 and 13) pretty well in tune. With the usual fourth valve the B with 24 is too sharp. With the tritonus system it is well in tune. I suggested certain compromises in the tubing lengths for the tritonus tuba to Herr Kleine-Horst several years ago and am glad to hear that they work well.
